This equation appears in my slides every time I teach collaborative negotiation. Many might see their pairing as incongruent. I see this equal footing in a positive light.

Conflict is an opportunity for creative thinking, innovation and bridge building. It is design thinking at its core.

Scientists problem solve by looking at the problem; design thinkers are problem solvers who prefer seeking solutions and opportunities to see things alternatively.  This video by Brett Newman offers a good overview of design thinking.

When facing future conflicts (or problems), try engaging the stakeholders in group solution testing over character and behavior assignations.  You’ll find higher quality, more creative solutions, innovation and a surprise, better relationships. If we consider conflict with a design thinking eye, then conflict = opportunity.
